Heavy Rain Forces Suspension of Classes Across Hong Kong

Classes for all morning and full-day schools in Hong Kong have been suspended for Monday, following a deluge of heavy rain that swept through the territory early in the morning.

The Education Bureau announced the suspension at 5:30 a.m. as the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal remained in effect. In its statement, the bureau urged schools to activate contingency plans, ensuring that staff were available to supervise any students who arrived on campus. Schools were also instructed to assess conditions and guarantee safety before permitting students to return home.

In contrast, classes for afternoon schools were permitted to proceed as scheduled. This decision came after the Hong Kong Observatory downgraded the warning to an amber signal at 6:05 a.m. and subsequently lifted all rainstorm warnings by 7:20 a.m.

The Red Rainstorm Warning had been initially issued at 1:15 a.m., just 45 minutes after the observatory first raised an amber alert. This action was prompted by a band of intense thundery showers impacting the Pearl River Estuary.

According to the observatory, the Islands District and Tuen Mun were particularly hard-hit, receiving over 100mm of rainfall, while numerous other areas across the territory recorded more than 60mm.
