Filipino Phenom Alex Eala Advances to Hong Kong Tennis Open Second Round, Moves Into Top 50

Alex Eala beats Katie Boulter HK Pdential Tournament

HONG KONG — Filipino tennis star Alex Eala provisionally broke into the WTA top 50 rankings on Tuesday after advancing to the second round of the Hong Kong Tennis Open, capitalizing on Katie Boulter’s injury-forced retirement.

Eala, 20, secured a 6-4, 2-1 victory when Boulter retired early in the second set, marking a significant milestone in her breakthrough 2025 season. The match saw Eala break Boulter’s serve and take the first set before the British player was unable to continue.

“This time of the year is a tough moment for a lot of players, physically and mentally,” Eala said in her on-court interview. “I hope that Katie can take this time to recover and just look back at her season proudly.”

With the win, Eala moved to 1,143 points in the WTA Live Rankings, provisionally placing her at world No. 50 — her highest career ranking to date.

Her next challenge comes against third-seeded Canadian Victoria Mboko, a rising star who recently returned to form after winning the Canadian Open in August. This will be their first tour-level meeting.

The Hong Kong Tennis Open, a WTA 250 event, represents another potential breakthrough for Eala in what has already been a landmark year for the young athlete.
