Guhit Kulay, a collective of Filipino migrant workers dedicated to fostering creativity and community through art, will present a group exhibition at the prestigious Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre from February 4 to 9, 2026. The show is organized by Galleria Camaya.

The exhibition highlights the talents of the group’s members, many of whom are domestic workers in Hong Kong. Founded in 2017 as an informal gathering by artists including group leader Marilyn Lopez, Noemi Manguerra and Cristina Cayat, Guhit Kulay, whose name means “stroke of color” in Tagalog, has grown into a vital platform for Filipino creatives in the city. The collective blends new art enthusiasts with veteran artists who volunteer their time to share skills and ideas freely.

Through paintings, workshops, and collaborative projects, Guhit Kulay supports fellow migrant workers by boosting self-confidence, promoting mental health, and providing a creative outlet amid demanding work schedules. The group also extends its reach beyond its membership, offering free Sunday art workshops (when venues permit), online sessions for camaraderie among members, and partnerships with like-minded organizations to encourage more migrants to explore the arts.

“Providing space for Filipino migrants to showcase their talents is a big encouragement for many more migrant workers to engage and hone their hidden skills,” the collective states, emphasizing its mission to foster creativity and community.

The upcoming show arrives amid a busy 2025 for Guhit Kulay. The group recently contributed artworks to a charity auction in February for Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge, a shelter supporting vulnerable migrant women. Other scheduled activities include participation in the DTI Art Expo at AsiaWorld-Expo from May 30 to June 2, a collaborative “100 Overseas Filipinos for Philippine Eagle” project with artist Ms. Bing Famoso and the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong in June, and the creation of a commemorative two-piece artwork series for the Philippine Consulate celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China.

Guhit Kulay’s work not only showcases artistic talent but also advocates for the rights and stories of Filipino migrants, using art to address broader issues of identity, community, and social justice in Hong Kong, home to hundreds of thousands of Filipino domestic workers.

The Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, located in Hong Kong Park, serves as a hub for visual arts education, exhibitions, and creative exchange, making it a fitting venue for the group’s efforts to bring migrant voices to wider audiences. Admission details and specific featured works for the February exhibition will be announced closer to the opening date. The exhibition will be jointly curated by Galleria Camaya and Hong Kong-based artist Rodolfo Canete.
