A Filipina domestic helper was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing about 520,000 Hong Kong dollars ($66,700) in cash from her employer in a high-end apartment in Hong Kong’s upscale Happy Valley neighborhood, police said.
The 59-year-old employer, a woman from mainland China, reported the theft around 9:30 a.m. after discovering the money — comprising 500,000 Hong Kong dollars and 17,000 Chinese yuan ($2,190) — missing from her residence at The Leighton Hill, a luxury complex on Broadwood Road, authorities said.
Officers responded to the report and, following a preliminary investigation at the scene, took the helper into custody on theft charges. The suspect, whose age and name were not immediately released, remains detained as the probe continues.
The case has been transferred to the Wan Chai District Criminal Investigation Team 4 for further inquiry, according to a police statement. No additional details on the motive or how the theft occurred were provided.
