The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is expanding its investigation into a controversial land acquisition deal, signaling potential broader implications in the P1.4-billion transaction that led to the dismissal of Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) administrator Arnell Ignacio.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac revealed Monday that investigators are probing whether additional officials were involved in the allegedly unauthorized land purchase. The deal, which bypassed the OWWA board’s approval, has raised significant governance concerns.
“We are currently examining the possibility of wider involvement,” Cacdac told local media. He emphasized that a specific committee within OWWA proceeded with the transaction without consulting the board’s full membership.
The investigation centers on procedural irregularities and potential misconduct in the land acquisition process. Cacdac indicated that multiple aspects of the transaction require further scrutiny before formal charges can be filed.
Ignacio’s termination marks the first disciplinary action in what appears to be a complex administrative scandal. The DMW’s methodical approach suggests a comprehensive review is underway to determine the full extent of potential wrongdoing.
The ongoing investigation highlights increasing governmental efforts to enhance transparency and accountability in public sector transactions, particularly in agencies managing overseas workers’ welfare and resources.
