Disneyland hosted a festive homecoming ceremony on Sunday to honor Hong Kong’s Olympians who recently competed in the Paris Games. The event was a vibrant celebration of athletic achievement, allowing athletes to share their inspiring experiences with nearly 1,000 team members, family, and friends.
Among the honored athletes were standout figures such as gymnast Shek Wai-hung, cyclist Lee Sze-wing, and the badminton duo of Tse Ying-suet and Tang Chun-man, who earned a silver medal at the Japan Open. Their presence highlighted the diverse talents representing Hong Kong on the international stage.
In his opening remarks, Commissioner for Sports Sam Wong Tak-sum praised the athletes for their dedication and hard work. He also took the opportunity to spotlight the ongoing efforts of Hong Kong’s Paralympians, who are currently vying for medals in their own competitions. Wong emphasized the importance of community support for local athletes and called for increased involvement from businesses to bolster sports development in Hong Kong.
“Long-term support from businesses like Disneyland is crucial for nurturing talent and enhancing Hong Kong’s reputation in the global sports arena,” Wong stated, rallying the crowd to back their local heroes.
In a related event, national team Olympians from Hong Kong also engaged with their counterparts from Macau. The gathering took place at the Olympic Sports Centre in Taipa, where eight gold medalists from the Paris Games, including table tennis captain Ma Long and diver Quan Hongchan, shared their experiences on managing pressure and overcoming injuries.
The athletes’ visit to Macau will culminate in a gala show at the Macau East Asian Games Dome on Sunday night, followed by a community event on Monday, further bridging connections between the two regions and inspiring future generations of athletes.
As the sporting community rallies around these champions, the hope remains that continued support will elevate Hong Kong’s sports landscape and foster the next generation of Olympians.
