Cathay Pacific has announced the cancellation of 48 flights following the discovery of a critical engine issue in one of its A350 aircraft. The airline, Hong Kong’s flag carrier, identified a component failure while the plane was en route to Zurich on Monday, necessitating an immediate return to its home base.
In a statement, Cathay Pacific revealed that this particular failure marked the first occurrence of its kind for any A350 aircraft globally. The airline promptly initiated inspections across its entire fleet of 48 A350s and determined that several aircraft required the replacement of the affected components.
Affected passengers have been notified and are being offered alternative travel arrangements as the airline works to resolve the situation. Keith Brown, Cathay’s engineering director, emphasized the thoroughness of the inspections, stating, “Each aircraft is undergoing a rigorous inspection. Upon completion, those cleared for operation will return to service, while those with technical issues will undergo further repair and maintenance work.”
Cathay Pacific is collaborating closely with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, along with the aircraft and engine manufacturers, to ensure safety and operational integrity during this process. The airline has not specified how long the disruptions may continue but is committed to keeping passengers informed throughout the recovery efforts.
As the airline navigates this challenge, it remains focused on maintaining the high safety standards that are essential to its operations and reputation.
