A portable phone charger burst into flames on a double-decker bus in Hong Kong’s Yuen Long district Tuesday night, injuring a passenger and the driver and forcing an emergency response, police said.
The incident occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. aboard a Kowloon Motor Bus Co. vehicle traveling along Yuen Long Highway toward Tin Shui Wai. Authorities said the device, belonging to a 25-year-old man, began smoking before igniting on the upper deck.
The passenger sustained burns to his left hand. The blaze quickly spread, filling the compartment with smoke. The driver, overcome by fumes, reported feeling unwell.
Both were transported to Pok Oi Hospital for treatment. Firefighters extinguished the fire within minutes.
An initial police inspection found no evidence of suspicious activity. Investigators continue to examine the cause of the charger malfunction.
