HOLLYWOOD — In a heartwarming triumph of perseverance and talent, Richard Goodall, known as the “singing janitor” from Terre Haute, Indiana, has won the 19th season of “America’s Got Talent” (AGT). The results were announced during Tuesday night’s star-studded finale, culminating in Goodall claiming the coveted $1 million prize.
Goodall, a long-time custodian for Vigo County School Corporation, captivated audiences nationwide with his powerful vocals and inspiring personal story. His journey from school hallways to the national spotlight resonated with viewers, earning him the top spot through popular vote.
The finale, which began with a one-hour countdown special at 8 p.m. ET followed by a two-hour results show, kept fans on the edge of their seats. In a pre-recorded segment, Goodall performed alongside legendary rock band Journey, led by original guitarist Neal Schon. The duo’s rendition of “Don’t Stop Believin'” brought the house down, with Schon praising Goodall as “an amazing singer, an amazing man.”
It was this very song that first propelled Goodall to viral fame in 2022, when a TikTok video of him singing during a school program at Davis Park Elementary garnered millions of views. The performance even caught the attention of former Journey frontman Steve Perry, who gave Goodall a social media shoutout.
Goodall’s AGT journey began in May 2024, when his audition performance of “Don’t Stop Believin'” earned him a Golden Buzzer from judge Heidi Klum, fast-tracking him to the live shows. At the time, notoriously critical judge Simon Cowell remarked, “Maybe it’s your time.”
The finale also celebrated Goodall’s recent marriage to fiancée Angie Vanoven on September 18. When asked about his new status as a married man, Goodall beamed, “She is the love of my life. I love her so much.”
As Goodall’s victory proves, sometimes dreams do come true for those who never stop believing. From school custodian to national sensation, Richard Goodall’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring performers everywhere, reminding us all that it’s never too late to chase our dreams.
