HONG KONG — Police arrested a 50-year-old woman early Monday on suspicion of attempted robbery after she allegedly threatened a customer service officer with a knife at Diamond Hill MTR station.
Station staff called police at 6:45 p.m. Sunday after the woman allegedly pointed a knife at the officer and demanded all Octopus cards and HK$100 banknotes. She tapped the customer service center’s glass with the knife before fleeing when the attempted robbery failed, according to the report.
Officers, including counterterrorism personnel carrying shields, searched the mall but did not find her. Police recovered a broken ceramic blade about 5 centimeters long at the scene.
Investigators later traced the woman to Tsz Ching Estate, where more than a dozen emergency unit officers were deployed.
Firefighters set up an air cushion at the estate’s parking lot entrance before officers in protective gear forced their way into a fourth-floor apartment at Ching Fai House around 1 a.m. Monday.
The woman resisted before officers subdued her and took her out on a stretcher. No knife was found in the apartment.
The woman, identified only by her surname, Lai, said she felt unwell and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. She was conscious when transported.
The Wong Tai Sin police district’s crime investigation team is handling the case.
