Hong Kong Suspends Classes as Tropical Storm Fengshen Brings Strong Winds and Rain

Classes at kindergartens and schools for children with disabilities were suspended Tuesday as Severe Tropical Storm Fengshen continued to impact Hong Kong, bringing strong winds, rain, and cooler temperatures, authorities said.

The Hong Kong Observatory maintained the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 until at least 6 p.m., citing the combined effects of Fengshen and the northeast monsoon. The storm, located over 400 kilometers south of the city on Tuesday morning, was moving away from the territory.

“Unless Fengshen intensifies significantly, the chance of issuing higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals is relatively low,” the observatory said in a statement.

The observatory noted that Fengshen’s outer rainbands were affecting the region, with rain expected to be “more frequent at times locally today.” It also warned of potential flooding in low-lying coastal areas during high tides at night, driven by the combined effect of spring tides, the monsoon, and the storm. Water levels along the coast were projected to rise 0.5 to 1 meter above normal over the next few days, with Victoria Harbour expected to reach around 3 meters above Chart Datum, a reference level for tidal heights.

The suspension of classes was announced as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students amid the adverse weather conditions.
