Seventeen Filipino seafarers, dubbed the “Courageous 17,” have returned home after being held captive for 428 days by Houthi rebels, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. personally committing to their comprehensive support and reintegration.
The seafarers, who were aboard the M/V Galaxy Leader when it was hijacked near Hodeidah in November 2023, were freed and received a warm welcome from government officials during a thanksgiving Mass at the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) office on Monday.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac conveyed the President’s directive to provide holistic assistance to the crew members and their families. “Let us help them rise again,” Marcos said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the returning maritime workers.
The comprehensive support package includes financial assistance, training certificates, employment opportunities, educational support, and medical care. The Department of Health has additionally pledged psychosocial support to help the seafarers recover from their traumatic experience.
A representative of the seafarers expressed profound gratitude to President Marcos, praising the administration’s diplomatic efforts that secured their release through negotiations with the Omani government.
The successful resolution highlights the Philippine government’s dedication to protecting its overseas workers, a critical component of the nation’s economy.
The seafarers’ resilience and the government’s unwavering support have become a testament to the Philippines’ commitment to its citizens abroad.
