Pokémon Go City Safari Transforms Hong Kong into Global Gaming Destination

Pokémon Go trainers embark on city safari in HK v2

Hundreds of international Pokémon Go enthusiasts have descended upon Hong Kong this weekend, turning the vibrant metropolis into a live-action gaming arena during the city’s first-ever “Pokémon Go City Safari” event.

Organized by Niantic, the game’s developer, the two-day event transforms Hong Kong’s diverse urban landscape into an immersive augmented reality playground, inviting players to explore landmarks while capturing virtual creatures.

“We need to find a city that is really easy to travel, and Hong Kong has that quality,” said Elaine Hui, Niantic’s APAC regional marketing director. She highlighted the city’s unique blend of architectural styles, from modern skyscrapers to historic neighborhoods, as a key attraction for the event.

For international players like Lisa Broadwell from Sweden, the safari represents more than just a gaming experience. “I like the walk and catch aspect of Pokémon Go,” Broadwell explained. “This event lets me discover the city in a unique and innovative way.”

Jim Haughey, a seasoned Pokémon Go traveler who journeyed from Las Vegas, emphasized the global appeal of such events. Despite a grueling 15-hour flight, he remains enthusiastic about exploring Hong Kong through the game’s lens.

The event underscores the growing intersection of digital entertainment, tourism, and cultural exploration, offering a novel approach to city discovery for a new generation of travelers.

The Pokémon Go City Safari continues through the weekend, promising an unprecedented fusion of gaming and urban exploration in one of Asia’s most dynamic cities.
