A health expert has raised concerns over a steady increase in local COVID-19 cases, which have surged to 4,500 in recent weeks. Lau Yu-lung, chairman of the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases, emphasized that this trend is alarming and requires immediate attention.
During a radio broadcast on Saturday, Lau highlighted the broader context of the pandemic, noting a significant resurgence of the virus in Europe, where approximately 45,000 cases were reported in just one week at the end of July. This figure starkly contrasts with the situation in the Western Pacific region, including Hong Kong, where cases remain ten times lower.
Lau reported that last week, outbreaks were identified in seven care homes across the city, affecting around 60 patients. Additionally, small-scale cross-infections have been noted in hospital convalescent wards, raising concerns about the spread of the virus among vulnerable populations.
In light of these developments, Lau urged hospitals and care facilities to enhance hygiene education and implement stricter internal control measures. He stressed the importance of protecting long-term patients from developing serious complications arising from infections.
Moreover, Lau advocated for the continued administration of COVID-19 vaccinations, particularly boosters for at-risk groups. “The COVID jab can significantly reduce mortality rates,” he stated, calling on individuals with chronic illnesses and residents of care homes to prioritize their vaccinations.
As health officials monitor the situation closely, the community is reminded of the importance of vigilance and preventive measures to combat the ongoing threat of COVID-19.
