Chief Executive John Lee and his wife, Janet Lee, presided over a vibrant reception today in honor of International Women’s Day 2025, an event co-hosted by the Home & Youth Affairs Bureau and the Women’s Commission. The gathering underscored the importance of women’s empowerment and highlighted the city’s commitment to gender equality.
In his address, Mr. Lee emphasized Hong Kong’s status as an international metropolis that provides equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender. He acknowledged the vital role that women play in families and their significant contributions to the city’s societal progress.
“The promotion of women’s development is of paramount importance,” Mr. Lee stated. “The Government attaches importance to women’s benefits and well-being. Together with the Women’s Commission, we will continue our concerted efforts in promoting women’s development and writing a new chapter in women’s advancement.”
The event also featured remarks from Secretary for Home & Youth Affairs Alice Mak, who highlighted recent initiatives aimed at empowering women. Over the past year, the bureau successfully held its inaugural Family & Women Development Summit and launched a one-stop family and women information portal.
Mak noted the establishment of the Women Empowerment Fund in June 2023, which has approved over 240 projects to help women realize their full potential. She announced plans for the upcoming “She Inspires” mentorship program, set to launch in the second quarter of this year, which aims to connect local female university students with accomplished female leaders for guidance and support.
The reception drew a diverse crowd, including commission members, representatives from women’s groups, non-governmental organizations, and local community leaders. The event featured thematic panels showcasing the government’s and the commission’s efforts to promote women’s development, sparking discussions on future initiatives.
As Hong Kong continues to celebrate the achievements of women, today’s event serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive society where all individuals can thrive.
