Hong Kong passenger among 20 in intensive care after turbulent Singapore Airlines flight

Bangkok, Thailand— Twenty passengers, including a Hong Kong national, are in intensive care after a Singapore Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence and made an emergency landing in Bangkok. The affected individuals are being treated in two hospitals in Thailand, hospital officials confirmed.

The passengers, hailing from Australia, Britain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the Philippines, are currently in the intensive care units of Samitivej Srinakarin and Samitivej Sukhumvit hospitals. The hospitals issued a statement at 1 p.m. detailing the conditions of the injured.

Tragically, a 73-year-old British man succumbed to his injuries, and a total of 104 passengers were hurt during the tumultuous flight. Of those injured, 85 required medical attention at the two hospitals.

The incident occurred when Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, en route from London to Singapore, hit “sudden extreme turbulence” over Myanmar approximately 10 hours into its journey. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board, experienced abrupt and violent altitude changes.

Following the turbulence, the flight made an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on Tuesday afternoon. Emergency services swiftly transported the injured to nearby medical facilities.

The airline has expressed its deepest condolences and is providing support to the affected passengers and their families. An investigation into the cause of the extreme turbulence is underway.
