Iconic film star Tony Leung Chiu-wai has made a generous donation of HK$3 million along with his personal collection of paintings to the Hong Kong Paediatric Society (HKPS). This contribution is set to bolster the Bright Future Scholarship for the upcoming year.
Leung, renowned for his roles in international cinema, became aware of the scholarship program during a work engagement last year. He was moved by the resilience and gratitude shown by its recipients, inspiring him to support the cause.
The Bright Future Scholarship is designed to assist students from underprivileged backgrounds, providing them with the resources to purchase essential training equipment and study-related items, thereby enabling them to pursue their dreams.
Leung expressed hope that his involvement will raise awareness and garner further support for children and youth in need. “I believe in the power of education and the importance of giving every child the chance to realize their potential,” he stated.
This year alone, the scholarship has aided 190 children living with chronic illnesses or in challenging financial situations. Another initiative under HKPS has recognized 20 students for their outstanding achievements, with over half of these recipients being children with chronic conditions or from low-income families. Notably, 45 percent of them have special educational needs.
Among the beneficiaries is 16-year-old Luk, who has battled type 1 diabetes since the age of six. Despite his health challenges, Luk has excelled in international fencing competitions representing Hong Kong. He plans to use his scholarship funds to acquire necessary medical equipment and fencing gear, crucial for his athletic development.
Leung’s significant contribution underscores the vital role of community support in empowering the next generation, particularly those facing adversity.
