Hong Kong Celebrates 75th National Day with Citywide Discounts and Free Rides

Hong Kong Celebrates 75th National Day

As Hong Kong gears up to celebrate the 75th anniversary of National Day, the government has announced a citywide celebration featuring over 400 events across various sectors. From free public transport to discounted meals, the festivities are set to create a carnival-like atmosphere throughout the city.

One of the most anticipated perks for commuters is a special fare discount from the MTR Corporation. On October 1, passengers using Octopus cards will enjoy a 25 percent discount on all MTR rides, including cross-boundary trips. This initiative, which also marks the 45th anniversary of the metro service, extends to Light Rail and MTR Bus services, allowing residents and tourists alike to enjoy cheaper public transportation.

In a further gesture, trams and cross-harbor ferries will be free of charge on National Day. Children will also ride free on most bus routes, while the iconic Star Ferry service between Tsim Sha Tsui, Wan Chai, and Central will be complimentary from September 30 to October 2.

Discounts at the Movies and More

For movie enthusiasts, 59 cinemas across the city will offer half-price tickets on National Day, for all screening formats, including IMAX. Over 80 films will be shown, giving filmgoers plenty of options to enjoy the holiday. Additionally, children, the elderly, and students who already benefit from discounted tickets will receive an extra 50 percent off.

Adding to the excitement, anyone purchasing a movie ticket on October 1 will be entered into a lucky draw. Ten major prizes will be up for grabs, including 75 cinema tickets, while the overall prize pool boasts more than 2,000 gifts.

Big Wins and Bigger Draws

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is joining the celebrations with two special Mark Six snowball draws. Held on October 2 and 8, each draw offers a massive first prize of HK$75 million, in honor of the anniversary. The lottery is expected to draw widespread participation from hopeful residents seeking their chance at a National Day windfall.

A Feast of Discounts at Eateries and Markets

Food lovers will also have plenty to celebrate, with eateries across the city offering 30 percent off meals or deals on designated menu items for the holiday. Customers may also find opportunities to purchase additional food items at discounted prices during the celebratory period.

The Federation of Hong Kong, Kowloon, and New Territories Hawker Associations announced that nearly 100 markets, hawker zones, and stores—totaling some 12,000 stalls and shops—will offer a 25 percent discount on select products. Customers can look forward to deals on items such as Iberico pork, grass carp (priced at HK$25 per catty), and two-dish rice meals for just HK$30.

Meanwhile, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is getting in on the action, with plans to distribute free gifts at cooked food centers, public markets, and hawker markets across Hong Kong and Kowloon.

A Citywide Celebration

With its broad offering of discounts, free rides, and entertainment, Hong Kong’s National Day celebrations promise to be one of the most memorable in recent history. Residents and visitors alike will have ample reason to explore the city, enjoy its rich culture, and take part in the festivities, which honor both the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the milestones of Hong Kong’s public services.

As the city comes together to mark the occasion, National Day 2024 is set to be a jubilant affair, filled with opportunities for enjoyment across all corners of the city.
