Hong Kong is facing an escalating flu season, with a prominent respiratory expert warning residents to prepare for potential peak infections in early February and urging widespread vaccination.
Dr. David Hui Shu-cheong from Chinese University revealed Sunday that the city has already recorded 37 serious flu infections among adults in the past week, with a striking 70 percent of patients remaining unvaccinated.
“The flu season is just beginning, and we anticipate the highest infection rates in the coming weeks,” Hui stated in a radio interview. He noted that hospital admissions for flu-related illnesses are steadily increasing.
According to Hui, the seasonal flu outbreak is expected to reach its zenith in early February, with infections potentially declining by mid-March. The expert emphasized the critical importance of vaccination in mitigating the spread of the virus.
“To achieve effective community protection, we need 70 to 80 percent of the population vaccinated,” Hui stressed, highlighting the key role individual actions play in public health management.
Health authorities recommend residents prioritize flu vaccination and maintain basic hygiene practices to reduce transmission risks.
The report serves as a timely reminder for Hong Kong residents to take proactive measures in protecting themselves and their communities during the approaching flu season.
