Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong — A Filipino tourist was killed in a tragic taxi accident outside a hotel in Tsuen Wan on Tuesday, August 5, when an elderly driver lost control of his vehicle, police said.
The incident occurred at 1:52 p.m. in the pick-up and drop-off area at 8 Yeung Uk Road, near the Nina Hotel. Authorities reported that the 80-year-old taxi driver experienced dizziness before his vehicle veered onto the sidewalk, striking a 35-year-old Filipino pedestrian and subsequently crashing into the hotel’s wall.
As shown on the video circulating online, the victim was carrying his luggage while looking at his phone as he stepped out of the hotel.
The pedestrian sustained severe leg injuries and was rushed unconscious to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:12 p.m. The driver, who suffered chest pain, head, and hand injuries, was conscious when transported to Yan Chai Hospital for treatment.
Police arrested the driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Under Hong Kong law, a conviction for causing death by dangerous driving can carry a maximum penalty of a HK$50,000 fine and 10 years in prison
