MIAMI — In a breakthrough moment for Filipino tennis, 19-year-old Alexandra Eala stunned fifth-seeded American Madison Keys with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory at the Miami Open on Monday, marking a historic milestone for her nation.
Eala, a graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy and the 2022 U.S. Open girls’ singles champion, became the first Filipino woman to defeat a top-10 player since the ATP/WTA ranking system’s inception in 1975.
The wildcard entry’s victory was characterized by her consistent baseline play and mental fortitude, overwhelming Keys, who recently claimed the Australian Open title.
“Growing up, it was tough,” Eala said post-match. “You didn’t have anyone from where you’re from to pave the way. I hope this takes Filipino tennis to the next step.”
Keys acknowledged her subpar performance, citing a lackluster serve and overall flat gameplay. “When you’re playing someone who returns everything, that’s not a recipe for success,” she admitted.
Eala will next face Spain’s Paula Badosa in the tournament’s round of 16, with momentum firmly on her side.
