Consumer Council Finds Toxic Chemicals in Most Hair Styling Products

Hair Styling Products Consumer Council

In a troubling discovery, the Consumer Council has revealed that the majority of popular hair waxes and clays on the market contain toxic materials that could negatively impact reproductive health.

The Council’s recent investigation tested 50 hair styling products, with over 90% of the samples found to contain harmful substances. Most alarming were three hair waxes and one hair clay that were discovered to have the fragrance allergen BMHCA – a chemical banned by the European Union due to its potential to cause reproductive toxicity.

“Animal studies have shown BMHCA can affect sexual function, fertility, and even fetal development,” said a spokesperson for the Consumer Council. “There are also indications it may disrupt the endocrine system.”

The report also uncovered the presence of other restricted chemicals. Three hair wax models contained the preservative MIT, banned in the EU. One wax had parabens at concentrations exceeding mainland China and EU limits, which can have long-term impacts on the reproductive system.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – known to cause eye, nose, and throat irritation – were also a concern. One styling spray tested at 77% VOC content, well above Hong Kong’s 55% cap.

Fragrance allergens like linalool and limonene were identified in many samples, often exceeding EU limits without proper disclosure on the packaging. And shockingly, nearly 40% of products lacked ingredient lists in Chinese or English.

“Consumers need to be very cautious when choosing hair styling products,” the Council warned. “Wash hands immediately after use and ensure proper ventilation.”

With such widespread use of these styling aids, the Council is urging heightened safety standards and transparency from manufacturers to protect public health.
