PERTH, Australia — Two-time champion Australia will kick off the 2027 Rugby World Cup against tournament debutants Hong Kong, China, as organizers on Monday unveiled a match schedule for the first-ever 24-team edition of the sport’s premier event.
The opening match is set for Oct. 1 in Perth, where the Wallabies will be heavy favorites against a Hong Kong side making its first appearance on the world stage. The fixture marks the beginning of an expanded tournament designed to broaden rugby’s global footprint while maintaining traditional rivalries.
The most anticipated clash of the opening round features a trans-Tasman showdown in Pool A. Australia will face three-time champions New Zealand on Oct. 9 at Stadium Australia in Sydney. The All Blacks will enter that contest having opened their campaign against Chile a week earlier.
Defending champions South Africa, seeking an unprecedented third consecutive title, will begin their defense against Italy on Oct. 3. The Springboks face a relatively straightforward path through the early stages, with subsequent matches scheduled against Georgia and Romania.
World Rugby chair Brett Robinson said the schedule was “carefully designed to balance player welfare, fan experience and global reach.”
“The wait is over,” Robinson said. “This is the moment teams and fans have been waiting for and the start of their Rugby World Cup 2027 journey.”
The expanded format has opened the door for several returning nations and high-stakes regional matchups. Zimbabwe is set to return to the World Cup for the first time since 1991, opening its tournament against Wales on Oct. 2 in Adelaide. On the same day, a star-studded France side led by Antoine Dupont will take on the United States in Melbourne.
Other marquee group-stage fixtures include a Celtic clash between Ireland and Scotland on Oct. 10, followed by a historic rivalry match between England and Wales on Oct. 16.
Organizers emphasized that the 2027 iteration aims to be the most “compelling” to date, utilizing iconic venues across Australia to host the expanded field of 24 teams.
