MANILA — The Philippine government is providing comprehensive support to 20 Filipino seafarers involved in a massive drug seizure aboard the M/V Lunita in South Korea, officials said Wednesday.

The Korea Coast Guard’s record-breaking interception of over two tons of suspected cocaine has left four crew members under ongoing investigation, while 16 others have been repatriated and cleared of direct involvement.

Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured the public that legal and financial assistance is being extended to all affected seafarers.

“We are continually providing necessary legal assistance to those under investigation and supporting the repatriated crew members,” Cacdac stated during a press briefing.

According to DMW Undersecretary Felicitas Bay, the 16 returning seafarers arrived in two batches on May 11 and 12, and have been debriefed by agency representatives and their manning agency.

The drug seizure, reportedly triggered by a tip from U.S. federal agencies, occurred when the vessel docked at Okgye Port in Gangneung, Gangwon Province on April 2. Authorities discovered the cocaine in a concealed engine room compartment, marking the largest drug bust in South Korean history.

The investigation remains ongoing, with four Filipino crew members still under scrutiny in South Korea.
