YouTube sensation known as ‘IShowSpeed’ triggered widespread disruption in Hong Kong’s mass transit system Friday, overwhelming subway platforms and prompting police intervention amid a massive, uncontrolled fan gathering.
The social media influencer, boasting 38 million YouTube subscribers, transformed a routine subway ride into a chaotic spectacle that significantly disrupted public transportation and drew immediate law enforcement response.
Witnesses described a scene of pandemonium as hundreds of fans swarmed the MTR system, particularly at Sheung Wan and Tin Hau stations. The 23-year-old content creator’s presence precipitated a security nightmare, with fans reportedly damaging exit gates and creating dangerous crowd conditions.
Video footage captured the influencer’s bodyguards forming a human barricade, repeatedly shouting “move!” while attempting to control the surging crowd. At one point, the star himself was heard yelling “shut up!” as fans sang and cheered uncontrollably.
The incident escalated when fans began violating transit protocols, running up escalators in the wrong direction and illegally jumping turnstiles. MTR staff, overwhelmed by the situation, promptly contacted police.
Hong Kong police confirmed receiving a notification at 3:46 pm about the massive fan gathering, which created severe congestion in station lobbies and platforms. The incident remains under investigation.
This unexpected transit takeover underscores the growing influence of social media personalities and the potential public safety challenges they can inadvertently create.
The YouTuber, in Hong Kong for tourism and content creation, was reportedly visiting local attractions like Ocean Park prior to the transit incident.
