MANILA — The Philippines has unveiled a dedicated immigration wing at Ninoy Aquino International Airport to streamline processing for overseas Filipino workers, a pivotal move aimed at honoring the nation’s migrant laborers.
Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado announced Wednesday the launch of a specialized area at Terminal 3, featuring six additional counters staffed by 12 immigration officers, designed to expedite departure procedures for overseas workers.
“These are our modern-day heroes,” Viado said, emphasizing the wing’s purpose to recognize the sacrifices of approximately 3,400 Filipino workers who depart daily for international employment.
The expansion comes strategically before long holiday periods, traditionally among the busiest travel seasons. By creating exclusive processing lanes, immigration authorities expect to significantly reduce waiting times and improve traveler experience.
Approximately 2.2 million Filipinos work abroad, sending home billions in remittances that constitute a critical component of the national economy. The new facility represents a tangible commitment to supporting this workforce.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration has prioritized migrant worker welfare, viewing the airport wing as part of broader efforts to streamline overseas employment processes.
The project, developed in collaboration with the Department of Migrant Workers and New NAIA Infrastructure Corp., signals a renewed focus on treating overseas workers with enhanced dignity and efficiency.
