MANILA, Philippines — In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable urban transportation, the Philippines has launched its first autonomous bus service in New Clark City, marking a significant step in the country’s smart city ambitions.

The self-driving vehicle, powered by Japanese technology, began operations on September 10, offering free rides to commuters until June 2025. The service covers routes in New Clark City, Clark Freeport Zone, and Clark International Airport, providing a glimpse into the future of public transportation in the Southeast Asian nation.

This initiative stems from a collaboration between the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), Zenmov, Inc., and MC Metro Transport Operation, Inc. The project received financial backing from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as part of a mobility demonstration program.

BCDA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Gisela Kalalo emphasized the potential impact of the project, stating, “We can definitely learn a lot from Japan’s advanced and innovative transport system. By integrating their smart autonomous vehicle technology, we ensure a more sustainable and scalable transport solution here in Clark.”

The autonomous bus service, dubbed the Primary Rapid Transit, aims to provide “last mile” connectivity within the Clark area. It utilizes a sophisticated transportation cloud system called Smart Mobility Operation Cloud, showcasing the integration of cutting-edge technology in public transit.

This initiative aligns with BCDA’s vision to transform New Clark City into the Philippines’ first sustainable, smart, and green urban center. Kalalo added that the project is expected to “positively transform the everyday lives of those living and working within Clark — making it easier to get around, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting a green and low-carbon environment.”

As cities worldwide grapple with urbanization challenges, New Clark City’s autonomous bus service represents a bold step towards innovative, eco-friendly public transportation solutions. The success of this pilot program could pave the way for similar initiatives across the Philippines and potentially influence urban planning strategies throughout Southeast Asia.

With the service set to run until June 2025, all eyes will be on New Clark City as it demonstrates the viability and benefits of autonomous public transportation in real-world conditions.
