The Ma On Shan Sports Centre was abuzz with excitement today as the Hong Kong, China Delegation returned from the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. A jubilant reception honored the athletes’ remarkable achievements, highlighting their perseverance and skill.
The delegation, comprising 23 athletes, competed in eight events including archery, athletics, badminton, boccia, equestrian, swimming, table tennis, and wheelchair fencing. Their efforts were rewarded with an impressive haul of three gold medals, four silver, and one bronze in swimming, boccia, and badminton.
Chief Executive John Lee, officiating the event, presented certificates of commendation to the athletes, applauding their extraordinary performance. He expressed gratitude not only to the athletes but also their coaches, medical team, and supporting staff, as well as the sports committees and associations involved.
Lee praised the athletes for overcoming physical challenges to compete on the world stage, showcasing their indomitable sportsmanship. “They serve as powerful examples of telling good Hong Kong stories internationally,” he stated.
He also highlighted the Government’s commitment to promoting disability sports, with over $130 million allocated this year—a 40% increase from five years ago.
In collaboration with the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, a five-year pilot program has been launched focusing on career and education for athletes. This initiative aims to equip them with skills for life beyond sports, enabling them to train and compete without financial concerns.
Following the reception, Chief Executive Lee hosted a luncheon at Government House to further honor the delegation’s achievements and contributions.
