Hong Kong Museums Punch Above Weight, Culture Chief Says After Paris Trip

Hong Kong’s world-class museum curation to showcase global exhibitions

Hong Kong’s museums are world-class storytellers that overcome spatial limitations through innovative curation and technology, according to the city’s top cultural official.

Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui returned from a recent French tour with ambitious plans to elevate Hong Kong’s cultural landscape, highlighting the city’s ability to host compelling international exhibitions despite modest collections.

“Our curators excel at storytelling,” Law told reporters Monday. “Limited space doesn’t mean limited creativity.”

Recent high-profile exhibitions like the touring retrospectives of architect I.M. Pei and artist Yayoi Kusama demonstrate Hong Kong’s curatorial prowess. These shows, meticulously organized thematically, showcased entire career trajectories using predominantly borrowed works.

During her Paris visit, Law explored renowned institutions like the Musée d’Orsay and Musée Guimet, revealing an upcoming collaborative project with the West Kowloon Cultural District planned for 2027.

The secretary emphasized the critical role of private collectors and technology in enriching exhibition experiences. “Private collectors here are incredibly generous,” she said, noting potential future exhibitions could be entirely sourced from private collections.

Law also teased an upcoming outdoor event celebrating Hong Kong’s iconic intellectual properties, signaling the city’s commitment to diverse cultural programming.

Reflecting on her personal arts journey, Law stressed that “exposure breeds appreciation,” underscoring her vision of making cultural experiences accessible and engaging for Hong Kong residents and visitors alike.

The interview suggests Hong Kong is positioning itself as a dynamic cultural hub, leveraging innovative storytelling and strategic international partnerships.
