Hong Kong Mall Marks 20th Anniversary with AI Sports Extravaganza

APM celebrates 20th anniversary

Sun Hung Kai Properties’ flagship mall, apm, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a groundbreaking “AI Sports Games” event, featuring China’s cutting-edge humanoid robots in a dazzling display of technology and entertainment. The showcase, which coincides with the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China on July 1, transforms the mall into a futuristic arena, highlighting advancements in artificial intelligence and reinforcing apm’s status as a cultural and retail landmark.

The star of the event is Songyan Dynamics’ Humanoid Smart Robot N2, Beijing’s first robot marathon contestant, making its Hong Kong debut. Joined by Unitree Robotics’ Humanoid Robot G1, programmed for boxing and fencing, the robots will compete on a 1,000-square-foot stage in exhibition matches including boxing, long-distance running, and football. The lineup also features martial arts performances by UBTECH’s Alpha1 Pro and Wukong robots, alongside acrobatic flips from the Unitree Go 2 Pro Robotic Dog, promising a spectacle for all ages.

“This is our gift to Hong Kong,” said Maureen Fung Sau-yim, executive director of Sun Hung Kai Properties. “Since our soft opening in 2005, apm has redefined the shopping experience by blending technology, entertainment, and lifestyle. The ‘AI Sports Games’ showcase offers the public a front-row seat to China’s latest AI innovations.”

A highlight of the event is the “AI Unitree Robot Boxing Exhibition Match,” with commentary from Hong Kong boxing legend Bomber Heung Pak-wing, who will share insights on AI’s potential in sports. Another crowd favorite will see young players from Little Lion FC take on the Booster T1 Robot in a friendly football match, aligning with Hong Kong’s push for “event-driven tourism.”

Previously staged to acclaim at Shanghai IFC and Nanjing IFC, the Hong Kong edition is the largest yet, combining sports, entertainment, and interactive experiences. The event underscores apm’s role as a pioneer in Hong Kong’s retail scene, having introduced innovations like overnight World Cup screenings and citywide Olympic cheer events over the past two decades.

To mark the handover anniversary, apm is offering flash deals for The Point members with Hong Kong ID numbers containing “2” or “8.” From noon on July 1, eligible members can claim a HK$20 dining e-voucher at designated counters, adding a festive touch to the celebrations.

Fung reported robust retail performance across Sun Hung Kai Properties’ malls in 2025, with strong growth in tourist hubs like Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Central. Neighborhood malls, particularly in the Northeast New Territories, saw gains in dining and jewelry, with cosmetics and health products also performing well. APM, located near the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, continues to draw international tourists and Greater Bay Area visitors, cementing its role as a retail and cultural hotspot.

With outdoor cafés, pet-friendly zones, themed markets, and pop-up stores, apm aligns with the government’s “mega-event economy” vision, ensuring memorable experiences for all. As Fung put it, “In Hong Kong, there’s truly no place without tourism.”
