Honoring the backbone of the Philippine economy, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration celebrated migrant workers Monday, casting a spotlight on their sacrifices and economic resilience.
Regional Director Martel Dasayon delivered an emotional tribute at the Baguio Convention Center, where over 300 overseas Filipino worker (OFW) families gathered to commemorate their contributions and challenges.
“When the world stood still during the pandemic, it was the OFWs who kept it moving,” Dasayon told the crowd, drawing from personal experience as the son of a migrant worker.
The numbers tell a compelling story of economic impact. In 2024, OFWs pumped an estimated $38 billion into the Philippine economy, according to central bank data — a lifeline for millions of families and a critical driver of national economic stability.
The event was more than a ceremonial gathering. It included practical support: check awards for OWWA scholars, livelihood fund distributions, and complimentary services ranging from medical check-ups to personal grooming.
The government’s commitment extends beyond one-day celebrations. Dasayon highlighted ongoing efforts to protect migrant workers, including new airport lounges, a seafarers’ support hub in Metro Manila, and aggressive diplomatic initiatives to secure workers’ rights internationally.
“We want to bridge the distance created by working abroad,” Dasayon said, encapsulating the event’s emotional core.
Through programs like “Parokya ng OWWA,” the agency is ensuring that even the most remote OFW families receive critical support and recognition.
