LOS ANGELES — International action star Donnie Yen is set to expand the John Wick universe with a character-driven spin-off focusing on his enigmatic assassin Caine, Lionsgate Motion Pictures announced Tuesday at CinemaCon.
Yen, who garnered critical acclaim for his performance in “John Wick: Chapter 4,” will direct and executive produce the film, marking a significant milestone as the first Asian actor to helm a major Hollywood franchise production in such a comprehensive role.
The upcoming project will explore Caine’s narrative after his dramatic exit from the High Table, with filming scheduled in Hong Kong and Macau later this year. Collaborating with “The Batman Part II” writer Mattson Tomlin, Yen aims to deliver what franchise director Chad Stahelski calls a “modern day kung-fu classic.”
“The John Wick series represents the pinnacle of action filmmaking,” Yen said. “This opportunity to expand the universe is both thrilling and deeply meaningful.”
Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson expressed full confidence in Yen’s vision. “Donnie is not just an incredible star, but a smart director who understands global action cinema,” Fogelson stated.
The announcement comes alongside reveals of additional franchise developments, including “John Wick 5” and an animated prequel, signaling Lionsgate’s continued investment in the high-octane franchise.
Yen, known for the “Ip Man” series and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” brings significant international credibility to the project, promising audiences a unique perspective on the John Wick world.
