PARIS — In a dazzling display of skill and teamwork, China’s Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong triumphed in the mixed doubles badminton event at the Paris Olympics, clinching the gold medal with a commanding victory over South Korea’s Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun on Friday.

The match, held in front of an enthusiastic crowd, showcased the world number one duo’s dominance as they swept the South Koreans in straight sets, finishing 21-8, 21-11.

From the outset, Zheng and Huang attacked relentlessly, establishing a formidable lead that left their opponents struggling to keep pace. Despite a spirited effort from Kim and Jeong, who sought to mount a comeback in the second game, the Chinese pair quickly regained control. By targeting one player at a time, Zheng and Huang exploited their rivals’ weaknesses, ultimately widening the gap with powerful smash shots.

The bronze medal was awarded to Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino, who secured their place on the podium after a hard-fought match.

In a heartwarming turn of events, the celebration took an unexpected twist as Huang’s boyfriend, fellow Chinese shuttler Liu Yuchen, made a surprise appearance post-match. As Huang stood on the podium receiving her gold medal, Liu knelt down with an engagement ring, asking her, “I will love you for my whole life. Will you marry me?” The crowd erupted in cheers, adding a personal highlight to an already unforgettable day.

This gold medal marks a significant redemption for Zheng and Huang, who faced disappointment at the Tokyo Olympics, losing to their Chinese compatriots in the final. This time around, they savored the sweet taste of victory in just under an hour of play, solidifying their status as the world’s top mixed doubles team.

As the celebrations continued, the atmosphere was electric, blending the thrill of athletic achievement with the joy of personal milestones, making it a day to remember for both athletes and fans alike.
