Macau Launches MOP 485 Million Consumer Reward Program to Boost Off-Season Spending

MACAU — The Macau government, in collaboration with local chambers of commerce, has unveiled a MOP 485 million consumer reward program set to launch next month, aiming to stimulate local spending and support businesses amid the traditional tourism off-season, officials announced Tuesday.

The “Macau Consumption Reward Scheme” will run for 13 weeks, from September 1 to November 30, building on the success of a pilot program earlier this year. Key updates include enhanced support for seniors and the introduction of a new benefit for people with disabilities.

Elderly residents aged 65 and older will receive a MOP 500 direct discount—up from MOP 300 in prior iterations—collectible via their senior citizen cards at 100 designated service points across the city. For the first time, eligible persons with disabilities can apply for a “Care Card” offering MOP 500 in instant discounts; applicants must submit a disability assessment card by November 28 to qualify. Participants cannot claim both senior and disability benefits.

All residents can join the program’s popular lucky draw: Making electronic payments of MOP 50 or more from Monday to Friday earns lottery chances. Prizes range from MOP 10 to MOP 200 in electronic vouchers, redeemable on weekends at participating merchants with a minimum spend of MOP 30.

Yau Yun-wah, director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, emphasized the initiative’s role in “promoting local consumption, stabilizing economic recovery during the upcoming low season, and boosting market confidence” amid the National Games atmosphere. He called it a “vital stimulus for the community’s economy.”

The program reflects Macau’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy beyond gaming and support small businesses as it navigates seasonal fluctuations in tourism revenue.
