Congratulations to Mr.Tony Leung Chiu Wai who has just brought Hong Kong the prestigious Golden Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on 2 September 2023 at Venice.
Being the first Chinese actor to receive the much-coveted Lifetime Achievement award in movies, Leung paid an emotional tribute to his home city in his acceptance speech, thanking “Hong Kong cinema” and the “‘wonderful people” he has worked with.
From humble beginnings in a local TV drama, Soldier of Fortune (1982), and making his debut on the silver screen in Mad, Mad 83 (1983), to playing a wide array of award-winning roles such as a deaf and mute son, City of Sadness (1989).
In Infernal Affairs, Leung played a struggling undercover cop (2002), and a lovestruck journalist In the Mood for Love (2000), etc., the iconic actor has been a screen magnet without fail in whatever genre of films that he took on in his 40-year-long career.
During the interview with media reporters ahead of the ceremony, the 61-year-old acting had helped him become less shy.
“I used to suppress all the feelings inside. I didn’t show all my feelings in front of others,” Leung said.
