Migrant Workers Group calls for minimum wage

Panawagan ng grupo ng AMCB sa Gobyerno ng HK ay HK$6,106 ang buwanang sweldo, at HK$3,065 naman ang food allowance sa naganap na meeting sa Labor Department ngayong araw, 9 August.
HONG KONG – The Asian Migrants Coordinating Body (AMCB) renewed calls on Wednesday for higher wages and better treatment of the city’s hundreds of thousands of migrant domestic workers.
Speaking after a meeting with the Labour Department, the AMCB demanded a “living wage” of HK$6,106 per month, up from the current HK$4,630, as well as a food allowance of HK$3,065.
The group argued that migrant workers, who comprise around 10% of Hong Kong’s workforce, contribute greatly to the city but struggle to make ends meet amid soaring inflation. Half their wages go to local expenses, the AMCB said.
The organization also urged the government not to accuse workers of “job-hopping,” a practice it sees as discriminatory.
Other demands included minimum wage coverage, abolishing the “two-week rule” that requires fired workers to leave Hong Kong quickly, allowing direct hiring, and prosecuting employers who underpay.
The calls come as Hong Kong contends with both rising living costs and a shrinking workforce due to demographic decline. The government has yet to meet the AMCB’s demands after years of lobbying.
