Hong Kong’s transportation landscape is on the brink of a revolutionary transformation as the city welcomes its first-ever hydrogen double-deck bus. The cutting-edge zero-emission vehicle has commenced service on Route 20, marking a significant milestone in the transition towards greener public transportation. Just two years ago, Hong Kong introduced its first electric double-deck bus, and now, with the deployment of the hydrogen bus, the city is taking another giant leap forward.

The hydrogen double-deck bus, a true marvel of modern engineering, operates from and refuels at Hong Kong’s first hydrogen refueling station located in the West Kowloon Depot. Today, at 11:00 am, it embarked on its inaugural journey, filled with excitement and anticipation. To commemorate this historic moment, the bus company distributed certificates and gifts to the enthusiastic passengers who were fortunate enough to be part of this significant event.

Initially serving Route 20, the hydrogen bus will traverse from Kai Tak (Muk On Street) to Cheung Sha Wan (Hoi Tat), offering a daily schedule of 6 to 8 trips. However, this is just the beginning. In the next phase, the hydrogen bus will expand its operations to include two additional routes, namely Routes 20A and 22M. These routes are crucial as they serve as core routes for Citybus, providing valuable operational insights into real-world scenarios, such as differing traffic conditions, weather factors, and performance.

Roger Ma, the General Manager (Operations) of Citybus, expressed immense pride in the groundbreaking achievement of their “#MissionZero” campaign. He emphasized the company’s commitment to serving the citizens of Hong Kong and their dedication to introducing more hydrogen and electric buses for parallel testing and deployment within the year. Citybus stands as the industry leader in zero-emission transformation, backed by extensive experience in research and development, a skilled engineering team, and valuable operational experience with both electric and hydrogen buses.

Looking ahead, Citybus aims to operate a full fleet of zero-emission buses by 2045, further solidifying its role as a pioneer in the field of new energy vehicles. The company remains focused on collaboration with the Inter-departmental Working Group and the wider government to promote policy reforms that support hydrogen development, new energy vehicles, and infrastructure.

Citybus, owned by Bravo Transport Services, is deeply committed to improving the quality of life for the citizens of Hong Kong. With a workforce of over 5,000 employees and a fleet of more than 1,700 buses operating across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories, the company serves over 1 million customers every day. Notably, all Citybus vehicles operate at the Euro 5 emissions standard or above, demonstrating the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability.

As Hong Kong embraces this groundbreaking hydrogen bus project, the city paves the way for a cleaner and greener future. With its commitment to innovation and sustainability, Citybus is leading the charge towards a zero-emission transportation system, setting an example for cities around the world. The deployment of the hydrogen double-deck bus on Route 20 is only the beginning of a transformative journey that promises to redefine Hong Kong’s public transportation landscape.
