In a meticulously planned operation, the Yau Tsim Police District Special Duties Unit successfully raided a suspected illegal gambling stall in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, following a tip-off and an extensive investigation. The operation, which took place yesterday afternoon, resulted in the arrest of five individuals and the seizure of incriminating evidence.
At approximately 1:00 p.m., law enforcement personnel stormed a flat located at 31-37 Jordan Road, where the illegal gambling activities were believed to be taking place. Among those apprehended was a 40-year-old Filipino woman with a Hong Kong identification card, suspected of managing the illicit establishment.
Additionally, a local man, a local woman, a Nepalese man, and a Ukrainian woman, aged between 29 and 51, were also nabbed on charges of gambling in the illegal establishment. Presently, all individuals under arrest are being held in custody.
During the operation, officers managed to confiscate significant evidence to support the case. Among the seized items were five fishing machines, a card reader, a batch of game cards, and approximately $1,200 in gambling money.
The crackdown aligns with the stipulations outlined in the Gambling Ordinance (Chapter 148 of the Laws of Hong Kong). Authorities emphasize that anyone involved in operating or assisting in the operation of an illegal casino can face severe penalties, including a maximum fine of $5,000,000 and imprisonment for up to seven years. Furthermore, individuals who choose to gamble in such establishments commit an offense themselves, punishable by a first conviction fine of $10,000 and up to three months of imprisonment.
Illegal gambling remains a pressing concern, and enforcement agencies are dedicated to tackling this issue head-on to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. Investigations into the operation continue as authorities work diligently to dismantle illegal gambling networks and maintain law and order in the region.
Hong Kong residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to illegal gambling premises to the authorities, as collective efforts are crucial in combating this underground industry.
