Presscon on US humanitarian assistance to typhoon Yolanda victims

A press conference was be held today, Nov. 12  at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, at the Ocean Terminal, TST.  Captain Thomas Disy of USS Antietam, which is docked at the Ocean Terminal, answered media questions on the deployment of the USS George Washington Battle Group to support the humanitarian rescue effort in the Philippines.

In support of the Philippine government’s request for humanitarian assistance, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has ordered repositioning of Navy ships, including the air craft carrier George Washington, which is currently visiting Hong Kong.  The fleet shortened its five-day port visit and departed for the Philippines today.

The Department of Defense has deployed U.S. military forces in support of the Government of the Republic of Philippines as they lead disaster relief efforts in response to Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda.  This is a joint team effort that includes coordination by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development, in consultation with Philippine authorities.
