HK OFWs Reject The Mandatory Insurance and SSS

Mandatory Insurance and SSS

United Filipinos in Hong Kong (UNIFIL-MIGRANTE-HK) decries the enforcement of mandatory Social Security System contributions from overseas Filipino workers. According to data from Migrante International, the voluntary contributions could increase by 3000%, earning the government a cool Php144 billion, just for 2019.

‘OFWs in Hong Kong are already burdened by the HK$1200 mandatory insurance recently imposed by the Duterte government. Now they add this monthly burden, as if the myriad of state exactions is not enough,’ Dolores Balladares Pelaez, chair of UNIFIL said.

‘We all know that not all employers will want or be able to pay $529 every month. In the end, it will be the OFW who will pay for everything, just so there can be peace in the household.’ – Dolores Balladares Pelaez, chair of UNIFIL

According to her, the mandatory SSS contribution is equivalent to 12% of the salary. This poses a problem, according to Balladares Pelaez. ‘We all know that not all employers will want or be able to pay $529 every month. In the end, it will be the OFW who will pay for everything, just so there can be peace in the household.’

‘This means we will pay $529 minimum every month. Imagine what we could have spent it on instead: 13 meals or a few months’ toiletries or even better, we could just send it home to our family to mitigate the effects of Pres. Duterte’s inflation.’ Balladares Pelaez pointed out.

According to Balladares Pelaez, what UNIFIL is protesting is the mandatory nature of the contribution. ‘In the past, we have already protested the SSS contributions being mandatory. Even then, we did not prevent other willing and capable OFWs from contributing to the fund. What we want is for contributions to be voluntary,’ stressed Balladares Pelaez.

Balladares Pelaez explained, ‘We loath to turn over our hard-earned money to good-for-nothing officials who cannot even collect efficiently, yet are given extravagant perks. In the past they have only managed to collect less than 42%. Also, for sure, billions milked from us will be used to fund the electoral campaigns of the administration bets.’

‘In the end, OFWs have nothing to gain from this increase. This is just another scheme to extract money from us. We must fight against this!’ Balladares Pelaez ended.
