Filipino Catholics in HK celebrate canonization of St. Pedro Calungsod

| October 25, 2012

Thousands of Filipinos celebrated the canonization of St. Pedro Calungsod in a religious procession in Central last Oct. 23.

Fr. Dominic Chan, Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, led the community in thanking the Lord for the second Filipino saint through a mass at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception.

Pope Benedict XVI canonized the 17th-century teen missionary Pedro Calungsod along with six other martyrs of the Catholic Church last Oct. 21 at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

Fr. Emil Lim said St. Pedro is the patron of the Filipino youth, lay catechists, and all Filipinos overseas.

“Our new second Filipino saint St. Pedro Calungsod himself left his homeland to evangelize and he was a catechist as well. We have a lot of Filipinos similar to him in Hong Kong,” Lim said in an interview.

“Our overseas Filipinos here in Hong Kong see a very good model in St. Pedro Calungsod. In our celebration here, we have given particular emphasis to our young ones. We have a lot of Filipino families who have been living in Hong Kong for some time,” he added.

Fr. Charlton Plateros said St. Pedro Calungsod stands as an inspiration to overseas Filipinos.

“Having a second Filipino saint helps us remind that as Filipinos especially migrant workers here in Hong Kong, in spite of the many difficulties that we have encountered here, we stay in a place different from our own culture, we have someone up there to always pray for us and intercede for us,” Plateros said.

“We hope and pray that as Filipinos this is a moment of joy and praise for all of us.

We continue to pray that St. Pedro Calungsod will always intercede for us and bring us closer to our heavenly father,” he added.

The celebration was organized by the Chaplaincy for Filipinos in Hong Kong.
