Culture and Empowerment: The 11th Lang-Ay Festival In Hong Kong

A culture-rich celebration was participated by the Migrant workers from the 10 municipalities of Mountain Province. This year’s theme focused on: “Strengthening Cultural Unity and Empowering the Rights and Welfare of Mountain Province OFWs.”

The Mountain Province Governor Bonifacio C. Lacwasan, Natonin Mayor Mateo Chiyawan, Executive Assistants to the Governor Mr Randolf Awisan, Mr. Winston V. Calde, Mr. Marcelino Balaso Jr graced the festival.

The festival opened with a parade competition where the Besao Municipality took First Place followed by Bauko and Tadian.
Rev Fr. Dwight Dela Torre of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente -HK blessed the event with a Thanksgiving Mass.

In every festival of the Cordilleras there is always the prayer to God the Creator in the form of “Tukhab Banga” where an elderly will chant a prayer of Thanksgiving, blessings and guidance from God Almighty while holding a bowl of “tapuey.” One of the guests, Mr. Marcelino Balaso Jr did the prayer chant.

The sounds of the gongs filled the City Hall plaza as the 10 municipalities performed their distinct dances, songs and rituals. The Cultural Competition depicted the province’s practices mostly the planting-harvest to thanksgiving ceremonies and during traditional wedding celebrations.

The pattong, taking and eagle dances of the Mountain Province always draw people to dance. These dances are the life of the festival.
The Municipality of Sadanga took the First Prize in the Cultural Competition followed by Besao and Bauko, second and third prize respectively.

The event was impacted by the messages of the guests from the Provincial Government of Mountain Province.
Mountain Province Governor Bonifacio C. Lacwasan shared the programs of the Provincial Government of which the OFWs will benefit from it namely: 1) Passporting which the Department of Foreign Affairs(DFA) will be conducting again the Passporting this April 2018 at the Capitol building. 2) Another is the financial help to those who will apply for foreign jobs, the OFWs most specially with a minimal interest. 3) And there is a loan offered to OFWs who are planning to put up businesses once they decide to stop working abroad. Governor Lacwasan strongly believed that the constant gathering for a cause or any activity as people of Mountain Province can make the Mountain Province Community-Hong Kong bond stronger as one family and as a people of Mountain Province.

Natonin Mayor Mateo Chiyawan said that the Migrant Workers from Mountain Province should connect with each other as “no man is an island.” He said that solidarity is likened to parts of the body where every part no matter how small it is important. He further said that to be able to succeed, everyone should participate.

The 3 Executive Assistants to the Governor Mr. Randolf Awisan, Mr. Winston Calde and Mr. Marcelino Balaso Jr commended the Mountain Province Community-Hong Kong for sustaining the annual Lang-ay Festival. They shared that Lang-ay is coming together to strengthen unity, solidarity, understanding among the Community members. They said that these are beautiful traditional values that are to keep.

The Search for Miss Lang-ay HK 2018 added flavor to the event. 9 beautiful Igorot ladies competed for the title thru their Ethnic Attire, talent, Ethnic Gowns, Question and Answer. The muses we’re a delight to behold in their Ethnic attire and gowns.

The Title “Ms Lang-ay HK 2018″ went to the Muse of Besao who also was the Best in Talent and Best in Q&A.

The muses of Bauko, Sadanga and Tadian got the 1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up and 3rd Runner-up respectively.
Ms Bontoc got the Best in Production while the Best in Ethnic Gown is Ms Sagada and the Best in Ethnic Attire is Ms. Sadanga.

Added to this year’s festival was the Tapuey competition. Tapuey is indispensable during rituals and festivals. The municipalities of Eastern Mountain Province, Paracelis, Natonin and Barlig got the first prize and the municipality of Bontoc and Bauko were the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. The judging of the Tapuey we’re done by the guests.

The celebration which was hosted by the municipalities of Bauko and Natonin ended with the drinking of tapuey.
